UAE, 23 January 2018 – Under the patronage and in the presence of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and President of Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University, the University celebrated the graduation of the seventh and eighth batch of learners from the undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the School of Business & Quality Management, School of e-Education and School of Health and Environmental Studies. A total of 396 graduates attended the graduation ceremony at the Dubai World Trade Center, in the presence of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation, H.E. Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Deputy Chairman of Police and General Security in Dubai, Chairman of HBMSU’s Board of Governors, and members of the Board of Governors, and Dr. Mansoor Al Awar, chancellor of HBMSU as well as faculty and administrative officials, parents of graduates and learners.

The event celebrated the graduation of 26 learners with firstclass honors degrees, 30 with second-class honors degrees and 42 with third-class honors degrees. This achievement reflects the University’s success in developing creative approaches aimed at redefining the future of teaching and learning through smart technology, innovation and quality to hone qualified national talents and prepare them to lead the ambitious development process.
H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum have met at the graduation ceremony with an elite group of entrepreneurs who are HBMSU’s learners and alumni. The HBMSU President said he is proud of the learners for being a model for young national talents armed with knowledge, innovation and the determination to achieve excellence, which will help build the country’s future, under the directives of the wise leadership of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. H.H. Sheikh Hamdan was also presented with the creative ideas that have turned into promising projects that will add value to the national economy. This achievement adds to the university’s record of excellence in preparing entrepreneurs capable of creating job opportunities that meet the challenges of the 21st century instead of generating job applicants.
H.E. Lt. General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim explained that the graduation ceremony is an advancement for the graduates as they move on to share and implement their ideas that will contribute to social progress and the country’s overall development, as well as prepare local entrepreneurs capable of leading technological development. He said that he is proud for the graduates who are joining many of the country’s promising youths.
Khalfan added: “Today, and under the unlimited support of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the HBMSU continues its role towards graduating entrepreneurs rather than job seekers through raising the quality of scientific research, entrepreneurship and innovation, with focus on enriching knowledge and driving the progress of the smart education sector. This is in line with our strategic plan 2018-2020, which aims to support the UAE Vision 2021 in building a competitive economy led by Emiratis equipped with knowledge and innovation. In response to the wise guidance of our leadership to be positive and to work on promoting education, we look forward to continue our efforts to lead the way in re-engineering higher education locally, regionally and globally, in pursuit of creating an incubator environment for the youth’s creations as they represent the foundation stone to explore and build the future.”
Dr. Mansoor Al Awar opened the graduation ceremony by launching unprecedented initiatives aimed at redefining the future of global higher education, particularly the ‘Zayed Cyber Palm for Education’ initiative, which was named after a distinguished leader who had a deep insight and wise vision to establish the pillars of giving to ensure that the goodness of the UAE reaches the entire world.
Al Awar further reiterated that Zayed Cyber Palm for Education is inspired by the vision of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan and the launch of the project comes in the occasion of the declaration of 2018 as the ‘Year of Zayed’, a leader whose legacy and achievements remain a guidance for the University to continue pushing for excellence and prepare a generation of future builders. He said that this first-of-its-kind initiative will pave the way to achieve the directives of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, who said in 2002: “I want the University to be a solid foundation for future institutes and universities.”
Al Awar added: “HBMSU gears up for a new level of engagement that would undoubtedly witness broad and positive changes in higher education regionally and globally. We are preparing to be a palm that provides emerging electronic and smart universities with knowledge and a range of expertise that would enable them to benefit from smart education. We provide a massive cloud platform that provides technological services required for intelligent transformation, including the Student Portal, Student Information System, Virtual Classrooms, Online Payments and Technical Support Services, in addition to facilitating educational services and establishment of schools on the cloud delivering world-class education.”
Al Awar also announced the launch of the School of Artificial Intelligence, which is based on an ambitious vision that aims to create and apply AI knowledge based on research and innovation which will bring about positive social and economic change at the local and international levels. This pioneering move is part of HBMSU’s commitment to build skilled generations that will make the UAE a new hub for developing AI mechanisms, techniques and legislation, in line with the UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence launched by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The strategy aims to capitalize on AI as a platform to improve government performance, accelerate achievements, and create highly productive environment. The new school is a major drive towards re-engineering the future of education through quality programs such as Master of Science in A.I. and Robotics Engineering, Master of Science in A.I. and Game Design, and “Master of Science in A.I. and Computational Data Science.
During his speech, Dr. Al Awar added: “The graduation of this batch coincides with the Year of Zayed, which marks the centennial of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s birth, in commemoration of his memory, principles and noble values ​​as one of the greatest leaders in the world. H.H. Sheikh Mohammed once talked about the wise vision of Zayed that resulted in the achievements and successes that put the UAE on the world map, describing him as the father, the leader and the builder of the modern UAE. Zayed began to make a radical change in the concepts of education, and this is what we are considering today in our efforts at comprehensive re-engineering in education and make a fresh start to the future guided by the wise directions of H.H. Hamdan bin Mohammed, who said: “The world is changing, and we have to adapt with this change by changing education, so that we can be ready for the future,”. The process of re-engineering began when we succeeded this year in obtaining the accreditation for the ‘Master of Science in Change Management and Creativity’ from the Academic Accreditation Authority at the Ministry of Education as a fully online program.”
“Today, we started reaping the first fruits of this unique educational approach as we witness the graduation of these young people, which would normally wait in queue to secure a job, whether in government or the private sector. However, we have succeeded in implementing the principle espoused by H.E. Lt. General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, who instructed that the university should provide society with “entrepreneurs, not job seekers”. In line with this, HBMSU has provided the UAE community with a large number of businessmen of about 70 graduates who have embraced the principle of “Entrepreneurs, not job seekers”, and have succeeded in setting up their own projects with a capital of more than a few millions each. We are confident that our graduates will continue the march of scientific and practical achievement, and I wish them all the best, with faith that they will keep in touch with the University for more professional and cognitive support,” said Al Awar.

UAE, November 27, 2017The Dubai Center for Islamic Banking and Finance (DCIBF), an entity formed through a partnership between Hamdan bin Mohammed Smart University (HBMSU) and the ‘Dubai the Capital of Islamic Economy’ initiative, has released its third annual report on the Islamic economy entitled ‘Takaful: Sustainability and Growth 2015 to 2025.’ The publication reveals that the global takaful industry is growing at an annual rate of 9 per cent and is attracting broader attention worldwide.
The Takaful report was launched by Abdullah Mohammed Al Awar, CEO of the Dubai Islamic Economy Development Centre (DIEDC), and Prof. Nabil Baydoun, HBMSU’s Vice Chancellor for University Advancement, during the 4th Annual Knowledge Summit in Dubai organized recently at the Dubai World Trade Centre by the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation under the theme “Knowledge and Fourth Industrial Revolution”.
‘Takaful: Sustainability and Growth 2015 to 2025’ is the result of close collaboration between the DCIBF and DIEDC which forms part of broader cooperative efforts to support Dubai’s transformation into the capital of the global Islamic economy in line with the vision of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The ‘Takaful: Sustainability and Growth 2015 to 2025’ report which is edited by Dr. Omar Fisher, the global expert in the field of Takaful, was produced in Arabic and English to reach a broad international audience. It examines the efficiency and financial stability of the Takaful sector in countries with dual financial and economic systems.
Among the key findings are that the Takaful economy has significantly expanded in Near- and South- East Asia, Levant-North Africa, and the GCC regions, and that market penetration in muslim-majority countries continues to widen. It also reveals that 202 new Takaful entities were established between 2003 and 2015, with 51 per cent of the 57 Organisation of Islamic Cooperation member countries now hosting a Takaful institution.
The report adds that the global Takaful sector’s estimated manpower rose 55 per cent from 63,358 in 2011 to 98,400 in 2015, with experts forecasting 40,000 additional positions for filling within the next 10 years to sustain manpower ratios and operational productivity. The report further advises Takaful operators to re-assess their operating costs, adopt cost-effective new technologies, enhance a risk-awareness culture, and sharpen sales and marketing skills to boost the competitiveness of their revenues per employee.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who said that ‘Knowledge is the real capital of mankind.’ Over the past two years, the report has proven to be an important reference on the status of the global Takaful sector, which is growing steadily with expectations of its becoming a USD 52.5 billion industry by 2020. It continues to help identify best practices that ensure job opportunities as well as reveal challenges related to judicial and legal structures and marketing strategies based on innovation and technology.”
Dr. Al Awar added that the results of the report highlight growing international confidence in the Takaful sector, which has become one of the main drivers of the global economy. He explained that the sector offers promising opportunities to promote economic and human development, and is an attractive field for exceptional human resources to be involved in. He noted that the Takaful sector’s total manpower worldwide rose 55 per cent between 2011 and 2015.
He further pointed out HBMSU’s pleasure in unveiling the annual report at Knowledge Summit 2017, which he referred to as an ideal venue for bringing together the leaders of Takaful economy to share and discuss the latest developments in the world’s Takaful market. He said that the event unifies efforts to identify innovative mechanisms for shaping the future of the global Islamic economy.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and the President of HBMSU.


H.E. ELM signs Memorandum of Understanding with Mohammed bin Rashid School of Government

HBMSU Management and Learners hold productive dialogue to heighten learning experience and study life at the university
UAE, October 15, 2016 – Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University (HBMSU)’s Learning Council recently organized a meeting between top management led by Chancellor Dr. Mansoor Al Awar and a group of university Learners and Ambassadors to discuss ways to further enhance the learning experience and the study life at the university. The council provided an excellent platform for learners to actively participate by raising their ideas, suggestions and expectations. The management provided helpful feedback and agreed to further explore some of the key recommendations presented during the meeting.

HBMSU explores the future of education through launch of ‘Innovation Lab for the Future of Smart Learning’

First session discusses agenda of smart learning with participation of local & international academics from inside and outside the university
  
UAE, September 27, 2016 – In a bid to uphold the UAE’s smart education sector, Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University (HBMSU) has launched ‘Innovation Lab for the Future of Smart Learning’. The new Lab is a qualitative addition that will make strategic contribution in exploring the future of smart education in the UAE by stimulating innovation and creativity in developing knowledge.

It will also adopt a culture of continuous and sustainable development, confirming the pioneering position of HBMSU as a center of academic and scientific excellence in the Arab world.

Innovation Lab aims to provide a world-class interactive platform to stimulate innovation, strengthen creative thinking about smart learning methods in the world, and enhance communication among a group of prominent international academic experts. This will be done through a series of monthly meetings organized under the umbrella of HBMSU to determine the major emerging challenges, explore opportunities and address urgent issues in the smart education sector. At the same time, it will give recommendations and build innovative road maps to overcome the obstacles and improve the learning experience for the benefit of the learners all over the world, faculty and administrative bodies in the smart universities. The discussions will encompass all aspects of the development of the modern education system, with a particular focus on finding productive solutions to the current challenges in the field of smart education. It will also review the best practices and innovative educational methodologies that support advanced smart learning methods with the aim to develop educational models that not only open new horizons but also improve the standards in the field of smart education and distance learning.
Dr. Mansoor Al Awar, Chancellor of HBMSU, said: “The launch of ‘Innovation Lab for the future of Smart Learning’ complements the directives of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and President of HBMSU. The agenda of the ‘Innovation Lab’ was recently unveiled at the first meeting which was headed by Dr. Al Awar. The session reviewed the strategic objectives of the initiative and discussed a range of important issues and topics on developing methods of smart education. It also agreed on the key points that will be focused on in the next session scheduled on October 26, 2016.
The ‘Innovation Lab’ will held a series of monthly meetings attended by faculty members and the management of HBMSU. These sessions will be moderated alternately by each of the heads of the university’s six academic programs departments.

New report defines world-class apprenticeships as those rooted in sector skills, knowledge and progression to employment

Analysis of leading countries points to defining features of world-class apprenticeships with lessons for the Middle East
Dubai, United Arab Emirates, August 29th 2016 – A new report has been released in the Middle East from the University of Derby, supported by Pearson, which looks at some of the world’s most heralded apprenticeship systems. The report is particularly useful for the Middle East, where many countries, such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, look to vocational education as a means through which economic diversification and reduced economic reliance on oil can be achieved.

The report’s main author, Dr Ruth Mieschbuehler, interviewed some of the world’s leading apprenticeship reformers in countries such as Germany, Denmark, Australia and the Netherlands. The following characteristics are identified in the report as being particularly important for a strong apprenticeship system:

·       extended apprenticeships of between three to four years;
·       broad and in-depth scientific and industrial skills and knowledge;
·       the presence of a ‘master’ in the company to train an apprentice;
·       high-quality knowledge-based education and training;
·       recognition through an occupational title on completion of the training;
·       apprentices to acquire all the skills and knowledge necessary to work effectively in an occupation;
·     apprentices to become skilled workers in an occupational area with a critical and creative approach; and
·       progression routes into employment as well as into further education and training.

Commenting on the report, Ruth Mieschbuehler said: “This is the first time ever that world-class apprenticeship standards have been identified drawing on interviews with some of the world’s leading apprenticeship reformers. The indicators can be used to create criteria against which all apprenticeship provision can be benchmarked and the recommendations will point towards a higher quality offering for apprentices and drive forward world-class apprenticeship standards in other countries.”

Mark Andrews, who is responsible for Pearson’s vocational offering in the Middle East believes that this report is timely for the GCC, as governments across the region seek to secure future growth through apprenticeship-based initiatives. He says: “Commendably, the UAE and Saudi Governments, like others in the region, have made a strong commitment to vocational and apprenticeship-based education. This kind of hands-on, work-based education will play a key role in building highly diversified, industrial-driven economies that can compete in a competitive, globally-orientated market.

“This report is valuable as it provides concrete advice on what we need to do here in this region to ensure our apprenticeships are world-class. Giving young apprentices in the Middle East the skills and training they need to kick-start rewarding careers is just one of the benefits of a strong apprenticeship system. Another is reducing unemployment and the much-discussed ‘skills gap’ facing the region, as employers will have access to a growing number of highly capable apprentices, skilled in the areas necessary for success in 21st Century workplaces”.

Commenting, Rod Bristow, President of Pearson in the UK said: “In addition to supporting this research Pearson has also convened a panel of world-leading education experts to advise us on the development of all our new qualifications.
